Commission powers to impose common mobile phone chargers in question

21st February 2019

The Impact Assessment Institute has scrutinised the Inception Impact Assessment (IIA) on Common chargers for mobile telephones and other compatible devices.

The IIA displays an appropriate level of analysis for this stage in the policy process, but it overestimates the extent of the Commission's powers to impose solutions, which has important implications regarding potential regulatory solutions.

In ongoing work it should be recognised that one of the options in the new memorandum of understanding allows a vendor-specific interface without the commitment to provide adapters to a common interface. This is a key contrast to the commitment to provide adapters in the first MoU and should be a major focus of further analysis.
